Gerd Heuschmann corrects a horse

We debated a long time about whether we should put these pictures online. Before that, we investigated whether these pictures were an “isolated case”, an unfortunate “slip-up”, a snapshot taken during the correction of a horse, which it would simply be unfair to publish as a “norm”.

Our conclusion and our questions are:

1. Of course Gerd Heuschmann is no supporter of “Rollkur”, even if these pictures seem to suggest it.

2. Apparently, Gerd Heuschmann rides using a lot of power. In our opinion, to correct a horse using exceeding power is only justified if the security of the rider is at stake. This was not the case here.

3. A deep understanding of horse-friendly riding shows that a correction always requires more than just one single clinic. Gerd Heuschmann also knows and says this. Why then does he ride himself during his clinics trying to force first results in such a short time using pure power?

4. Everybody makes mistakes, everybody evolves, and this is something that has to be conceded to everyone. We hope that we will soon be able to report that Gerd Heuschmann stopped riding horses to correct them and decided to concentrate on what he did in such an excellent way these past years: enlighten the riders as to the importance of biomechanical aspects.

The photographs below were taken by a professional photographer and journalist during one of Gerd Heuschmann’s clinics in mid-June. The photographer moved about openly in the riding hall with her camera and a large telephoto lens, Gerd Heuschmann was not troubled by her being there. The Friesian horse was difficult to ride and hardly accepted any rein and leg aids. “The horse was rather dead to the legs and lazy,” according to photographer Julia Rau. All in all, the riding unit lasted around 25 minutes.
